He truly deserved the National Book Award - WOW - what a devastating story of unrequited love and the damage it, in tandem with societal norms, creates. I want to imagine how the main character’s life could have been had he been allowed to love whom he wanted. Instead of the heartache of carrying a letter around for decades with its associated fear of disclosure or discovery of truth - Well done!
