I personally would rate this 7.5/10. Here's why:
To start off, Nolan's direction was astounding, and the cinematography is absolutely magical. So insightful and intriguing- I really loved the way this movie was filmed. I watched it in 70mm IMAX, and while not great for us peeps who have sensory issues*, I thought this was a great experience. The acting was amazing, oh my goodness. Hats off to everyone involved! RDJ did an amazing portrayal of Strauss, and Murphy did an astonishing job too!
However. I went into the theatre expecting the following things: Oppenheimer's journey in discovering nuclear physics, the Manhattan Project and his part in it, the aftermath of the bombing and the effect it had on him, and his security hearing and the effect it had on him and his family. Not him cheating and going through very tense political turmoil. I mean, I suppose with the way the movie was filmed and edited, it wouldn't be easy to fit that in, but regardless it had so much more potential than what it ended up portraying. I didn't get a full picture of any of those, personally, and while I recognize that these topics were touched on throughout the film- especially the hearing, I still feel this could've done a better portrayal of Oppenheimer overall.
The explicit sex scenes in my opinion were absolutely unnecessary (no shame or hate towards Pugh, she did amazing as usual). I'm not against nudity in films, but gosh, the way this was so sexually explicit three times throughout the film was honestly a bit lame since they easily could've hinted at the depth of Tatalock and Oppenheimer's relationship in PLENTY of other ways. The nudity did not make sense in the context of a life of a scientist, especially also offending the Hindu community with the involvement of Gita in one of the three scenes.
Another thing: I feel like Rami Malek's character needed more screen time? His role is a small one, especially for his character's role and impact in the film. I would've loved to see more of his character too!
I shouldn't be surprised at the inaccuracy of the portrayal of Dr. Oppenheimer since the screenplay was based on an inaccurate biography of his life: "American Prometheus", at least based on what I have found in my research.
And lastly, as I said, I really appreciate the cinematography, the camera work, the direction, and Nolan's vision- as well as the actors. RDJ deserves an Oscar in a supporting role, and Cillian also deserves an Oscar. Matt Damon was also exceptional! The acting was phenomenal for everyone involved. I hope they get nominated for cinematography, instead of the best film. Was it worth my time? eh. Sure. I learned, but again, I feel like I would rather watch a well-done accurate history docu-film than a fiction based on a real person. (see: Imitation Game) as someone who loves science a lot (esp physics).
Thanks for reading! :D
edit: *On the intensity of the film: I personally did not find it intense at all, the political scene got tense, but nothing disturbing or terrifying as I have been seeing in reviews. It's not a horror/thriller at all, obviously. That being said, this is just my personal experience, and everyone has their own limitations and tolerance when it comes to films like this. I don't mean to invalidate in any way!
another edit: @ Christopher Nolan PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE INCLUDE CAPTION IN YOUR FILMS ðŸ˜For a movie where dialogue is extremely important, it's very much recommended that us audiences can understand the film. I couldn't hear a lot of the dialogue over the music score and the sounds in general.
