So I was I served just post Vietnam and had the pleasure to serve with many a Vietnam vet. This movie hit home as it showed in MOST respects the basic and ait I experienced. The Drills could still put hands on you and speak to you poorly, unlike today. Basic was still abusive . The guys who couldn’t hack, not an indictment of them, everyone isn’t built to serve.. we’re the same guys I knew on some level. The guys who actually might kill themselves.. they’re real , existed then and I’m sure probably now. The guys who were mentally unstable and capable of shooting a fellow trainee.. knew them too. And the inevitable racial tensions. All of these things were part of my boomer basic. I also got a bit excited to see the NCO’s at Tigerland , CIB guys, Vietnam vets… wearing the Jungle Expert patch having gone to JOTC in Panama.. a course I graduated from. This movie resonated with me having served in that era, I felt like all those guys were the same guys I went to basic and AIT with. Tigerland captured accurately the experience I had.
