I found this movie long and boring - I kept hoping it would improve but I just could not get into it

I was left underwhelmed by this movie. It seemed to get more and more ridiculous and by the end I felt like I was watching a video game. Both my friend and I commented on the fact that it left us unmoved in spite of the harrowing story. I am not really sure what didn't work but it just didn't gel.
