I read this book when I was in middle school (early 2000s) and I will never forget it. As a young Black girl growing up in small town Texas there weren’t many Black stories to read in the school library. And even fewer on the approved AR reading list. So when I found this book it was a gem and a real eye opener. While everyone else was reading Harry Potter this was my page turner. Even though it’s a fictional book, it was a refreshing dose of reality when it came to learning about Black history in school. When we can’t depend on our system to tell the whole store we turn to our own stories.
