I haven’t played all of the dragon quest games, but I absolutely loved VIII and XI. This movie literally feels like you’re watching a dragon quest game play out with great animation and fight epic fight scenes, because that’s exactly what’s going on. At first, the pacing of it feels a bit rushed, but as the movie goes on you start to realize why they chose to do that. Obvious and irrelevant scenes are skipped in favor of progressing the story, which is refreshing and keeps the movie feeling like something is always happening.
So much character building occurs in this movie that it’s kind of crazy how they figured out how to do that in a way that didn’t seem forced. There was a significant amount of action, and the story and feel of the movie never deviated from what you would expect when playing an actual dragon quest game (except at the end, which has, in my opinion, a really neat plot twist that leads to a really good ending).
This is legit probably one of the best movie adaptations of any video game that I’ve ever seen. I’m not a huge fan of the “how to train your dragon” kind of CGI that they chose to use, but it worked well and was very smooth and pleasurable to watch.
10/10 would watch again and highly recommend for fans of the DQ series or gamers in general. The ending will really hit home for you if you’ve ever sat up all night playing one of your favorite RPGs.
