I set my expectations for this movie extremely low. I had 0 hope due to the leaks and what happened in The Last Jedi. I was very surprised by how good this movie is. It isn’t perfect, but it’s still really good.
Before watching this, I saw a lot of people say that if you loved The Last Jedi then you would hate this, and if you hated The Last Jedi then you would like this. Those people are indeed correct.
Some people also have a problem with the pacing. It is a quite fast paced, but I’m okay with it.
(Spoilers Ahead)
I have two main problems with this movie:
1. Not enough around Anakin Skywalker. The first two trilogies follow the demise of Anakin, and the rise and fall of Darth Vader. Anakin was deemed the Chosen One, to bring balance to the force. If you leave out the sequel trilogy, then he is the main character of the entire saga. He should've had a bigger play in what happened. I think if they had simply switched a few of the parts with ghost Luke with ghost Anakin then it would've tied everything together much better, and make the sequels have a better connection to the prequels, because in my opinion one character isn't enough. His line when Rey is hearing all of the Jedi of the past is great, and I think there should've been more of that from him, but I am grateful for what we got.
2. The Last Jedi. There were so many bad plot holes and bad decisions in The Last Jedi, that I could go on for hours over how bad this movie is. It was inevitable that TLJ would taint TROS. I feel like J.J. Abrams did a solid job of making up for what happened in TLJ, but no amount of work could fix or cover up everything bad that happened in TLJ.
In regards to the leaks, they are correct. The leaks really worried me because out of context they seem really bad and cringey, but they actually work out quite well in my opinion. Rey's excessive force sensitivity makes sense with her background. I didn’t like her Mary Sue role in The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi, but her heritage justifies this even if it does seem lazy.
I loved the inclusion of Sith lore and callbacks to other movies. A lot of critics don't like this because they wanted something "new" like in The Last Jedi, but that doesn't work in this universe. A cinematic universe has limitless possibilities, but they do need parameters for everything to tie in together and make sense as a complete story.
I think this movie ends the trilogy well, although I would have preferred that this trilogy didn't exist, because it makes a lot of what happened in the originals worthless, but I'm satisfied with this ending.
