This is the best modern DCAU comic adaptation since Batman Under the Red Hood. It improves on the story while still being faithful to its characters and central plot lines. Though it isn’t perfect, with some animation errors and underwhelming writing choices, it was exactly as cheesy as I needed it to be. The writers of this film understand what makes Superman so great. They know that the “man” in Superman is much more important than the “Super”. Clark Kent is wonderful in this, a dorky kid from Kansas who just wants to do the right thing. His relationship with Lois is just as good. The fact that she is in love with Clark Kent and not Superman is what really sells me on this romance. As for the actual “Death of Superman” the fights leading up to the climax are magnificent, properly establishing the power of Doomsday with each Leaguer going down one by one. The final battle is this tense barrage of pain and heroics that kept me engaged throughout. Superman saving people throughout the struggle helped me care about the outcome so much more. Once Superman risks his life to save the earth, the movie gives the characters and the audience enough time to grieve this great loss. Each moment felt like an anchor on my heart as the civilians and heroes of the story all reflected on their hero, Superman. It was an incredible, unapologetic showcase of emotion and raw trauma that I didn’t expect from an animated feature like this. Overall, every Superman fan should watch this even without watching the previous movies in the timeline, it stand perfectly well on its own.
