I found this book so painful to read. Alex has no morals but has managed to get by because she is a pretty young woman who can think on her feet and is completely unscrupulous. I am sure there are a few such people but I did not find it at all life enhancing to read about her increasingly desperate situation. I WAS intrigued by some of the details of the very rich world she was living in for the week that the novel covers. BUT I could not see the point of writing about such an immoral person

I thought this was a marvellous book. Tremendous evocation of the period. Great whodunnit - with satisfying solution. Highly recommended
