This book was very disappointing! Back door racism at it's best. This book says a young 'white' boy pointed a finger at a girl of color and yelled "go back to the Mexican school! You don't belong here!' Why call out this child by color? This shows white children have anger, verbal violence and meanness to students of color. This would never be acceptable if the young boy were black using racist words against another student of a different race. And it should not be acceptable for any race. This book is recommended for 1st graders. Although it begins in 1944,(1st graders have no concept of what long ago means. To them long ago was yesterday) then why is the young boy wearing modern day clothes. In 1944, boys did not wear shorts to school. Again referencing to children that white kids are bad! Shouldn't we be teaching "All" children of every color they are important and kind and all races should be celebrated? Absolutley!!
