On its own merits I would give this an 8/8.5 out of 10. But it's some of the best TV that the TWD universe has had to offer in a long time, and it opens up a really interesting follow on (if executed well). It's also not just the story that makes me hopeful the future, but because these spin-offs are focused on 1-2 main characters, I think this solves a big problem TWD had in recent years. There were so many new characters, many of which were never developed in a way that earned the investment of the audience, that there were no stakes or any suspense in many scenes that should've been important. Negan and Maggie dominate the screen time of this show, and it plays very well. I can only imagine this formula will work well for the Daryl and Rick & Michonne's shows. The flaws of this show are relatively minor, and didn’t really hinder my enjoyment of the show. A few that come to mind are 1 or 2 scenes that are very important, well written and acted but are a tad rushed, and two instances of betrayal in the show that, at a high level, are fine and well established, but aren't executed as well as they could be, however neither of these ruin the climax. The intro scene in Ep 1 between Negan and Maggie is also a bit off. However, a big credit to the shows writers is that they care about their characters, Negan in particular, and unlike past years of TWD, they don't have incoherent character arcs where characters act of place or just go in circles. I hope the next two shows are as strong, Season 2 of Dead City is set up in such a way, that (especially if longer) could give us the best season of TWD since it's peak.
