It's a clunky old style game. I've seen nothing new or ground breaking in it. The graphics are OK, maybe 3 / 4 years old looking.
Controls are horrible, you can't switch weapons if you have the scanner open. Scanning things is confusing, there's next to no feedback about it, at least No man's Sky shows that you're doing something, in Starfield you have the scanner open, walk towards something... oh and then press E, but it only works if you're close enough to the thing...and there's no feedback to tell you that you're not. Oh then you have to scan x amount of the same thing before it's classed as being scanned, which is almost impossible when the creatures are flying.
Inventory management, OH MY GOD! What decade are we in? Go into your inventory, go into a section, hover over something and then remember what key to press to do something... oh and then make sure you press the right key to exit the inventory or you just go back a level, it's clunky in the extreme.
Then you get the loading screens, everywhere you go, load, go out , load, go somewhere else, load... Thankfully I've got a fast SSD, I can't imagine how horrid it would be on older hardware. There's no seamless flight, you can't fly across a planet's surface. You can walk across a planet, I'm not sure how far, because it just gets really boring to do so. Everything is based off fast travel, it's like Bethesda knew how dull it all is.
Space, the big selling point, the new and exciting focus of the game. Oh no, that's right there is no point to it. in short there is no actual space flight, there is no real exploration. You go where you are told to go, there's no point going anywhere else. The sense of speed and movement in space is non-existent. Move your mouse and shoot at things just like we used to do in the old Star Wars arcade games, that's about it.
Story, so far I've mainly followed it, but it's really just a case of go where you are told to go. Decisions don't actually seem to matter or make a difference.
It really does feel like Skyrim / Fallout, which as good as they were, they were good for their time, they have not aged well, seriously, if you think they are *still* the peak of gaming excellence these days then you really haven't played any modern games.
In short, do not believe the hype, and if you've paid £70 for this then I really hope you like it, because it truly is not worth it.
There is nothing new or exciting in this game, it's a rehash of everything Bethesda have done for years, but these days it just does not feel fresh, well to me anyway, i guess I've been spoiled by games that have advanced in many more ways than this. 5 years ago this would have scored a 4/5, but nowadays, I'm being generous giving it a 2/5.
