I will start by saying that I enjoy horror movies. I am a lifelong horror fan but this was NOT even close to good horror. There were plenty of gross and disturbing moments, but that’s all they were—gross and disturbing. And very predictable. There was no anticipation, no building of suspense, nothing to cause a start or jump. Just delving into one gross scene after another. It was also incredibly BORING. The pace was tediously slow with not much story or character development. It was painful to sit through and I just wanted it to end so I could get back to my life. The 2 hours it stole from me felt more like 3.5. Interminable.
The snowy scenes in the woods were pretty. That’s the one nice thing I have to say. However, not pretty enough to warrant subjecting yourself to this mess.
As others have pointed out it was too dark to discern what exactly was going on but maybe that’s preferable to seeing what exactly was going on. It will be terrible on the small screen—I don’t imagine you’ll be able to see much. And I found the dialogue very hard to interpret. I don’t generally have that problem. Not for nothing but why set the movie in Germany and have everyone speaking English with English accents? Set it in England if you’re going to do that. It just points out how silly and random this movie truly is.
It had the cast to be better. It had costume design and what could be seen of them, photography and cinematography. What it lacked was artistry, coherent narrative, story and character development and depth. It was boring and ultimately it has no redeeming value.
But the snowy woods were lovely.
