I dont usually write reviews, but kh being my favourite series justified me writing one here.
I am giving it two stars because honestly it is quite a rip off. At $45 AUSD it is half the price of a full price game and 50% more than most nicely sized DLCs which often range from $15 - $30. So expectations would be that we receive quite a bit of content, hopefully fixes for issues in the game (namely around balance though it would be argued these should be provided as a free update along with the DLC).
So what do we get (i wont spoil anything not shown in the trailers):
- Instead of a balance update fixing the damage amounts allowing you to think carefully about using different awesome mechanics in different battles they provide a bunch of *challenge* options which simply turn off the mechanis so you can play a more boring playthrough without all the awesome mechanics they built. (Value: $5 max if you like the challenge of turning these off, i agree its nice to have, but its no fix for the balance issues)
- Basically a redo of the end sequence of the game with minor changes, yes ill pay there are cool scenes, and the options to play as different characters but they are pretty empty, the bosses fight the same and the characters you play just have simple move sets and abilities, its nice that they are different but it is much more empty than fighting as sora. (Value: $3, its nice that its different to play as other characters but this is a very small difference)
- Answers? No not really, the extra story we get is very minimal and as usual with kh games and updates it just adds more questions than it answers. (Value: $2, its more story so thats cool, but its very minimal and just fleshes the gaps in things we already know)
- New area, its awesome, fun to explore, but there isnt a lot to do and it is over quite quickly: (Value: $5, its great but really compared to worlds in kh its rather disappointingly small/short)
- Boss battles, these are awesome and really well made, there are a lot of them so can keep you battling and learening for a while which is great. (Value: $10, these really are good and for people who like the challenge you can get a lot from these)
Based of these (subjective) values this dlc was worth $25, $30 max and I would have still been ok. But $45 is disgusting, it is Square Enix being greedy and taking advantage of their fanbase. They did not deliver, the absurd cost ruins the value of things that otherwise would have been great additions. They hyped things up like the inclusiuon of a story update which really gave no answers and the inclusion of FF characters which frankly was a joke. The final gripe is that the whole DLC is kept separate, the main game has not been touched. It is all the same and you cant even access the dlc in the main game, you have to save, then load the dlc content from the save and play in that separate game mode, then if you want to go back you save and load back into the main game. Square Enix did not deliver in this DLC and they ripped us off in it which is frankly disgusting.
