Why the hell is everyone giving this five stars?? Also spoiler warning. Let me just start by saying I have never read the books so I 100% do not have a biased opinion about this show and it’s writing as I have nothing to compare it to.
I binged the series. The first episode was very confusing and hard to follow. It didn’t explain anything that was going on and nothing made sense. It just expected me to know everything already as if I had read the books, and that in itself is inherently flawed.
-Nothing stood out about Alina and she was overall just a REALLY weak protagonist with no interesting qualities whatsoever. The actress chosen for the role was just a really big mistake, and I can’t for the life of me understand why each episode is so long, yet barely has any content or anything interesting in them at all!
-The love triangle stuff was boring and forced and most of the romance aspects of the show is just so bad. Every single character ends up having a crush on another character that isn’t important and it’s just awful writing.
-The Grisha never feel important because they’re just as weak as normal people and die frequently in the show.
- The way Kaz and his group were written started out as interesting but progressively get VERY old to the point when I got to episode 4, I genuinely forgot what they were doing and what their mission was.
-Kirigan is a weak antagonist and his character is extremely bland near the end of the series.
-The soundtrack was forgettable and the costume design was repetitive and cheap, which is fine for background characters but not for main characters. While Alina was on screen, nothing about her felt very important even down to her clothes. She would wear the same outfit almost every single episode even when she had to go to this important event in episode 5 where the show wants us to believe she looks stunning and important, but she looks the exact same and nothing about her appearance or clothes changes.
In conclusion, it was very hard for me to relate to any of the characters because there was no character development and too much boring filler that wasn’t needed in 50 minute episodes. Please just read the books if you want to experience this series.
