For those who want to have a quick view to the result of my review is this: Zombillenium is a good movie if you like dark-themed movies for the family like Nightmare Before Christmas or Corpse Bride.
Zombillemium is a stylized 3D movies that looks a bit like a 2D movies with its relatively flat coloring and cartoon look (also known as celshading).
In terms of story, the movie doesn't try to be above other movies, but instead it embrace well a different set of fantasy cultures and settings. It's not a movie with a story complex as it involve mostly one man (or monster) trying to cope with what's happening to him as he ends up in an unknown world separated from his daughter.
The cast of characters are also diverse and unique, but as the movie slightly loose itself at one point as it tries to touch too many subject at once (it recover after it), you could say that it can also work against itself and you might find yourself wondering around questions as "Why?" or "What's next?" as the movie simply skip some of the questions it keep asking itself.
In terms of soundstrack, the movie is as excellent as it can get. It's obviously not a Disney movie so you won't really get many songs out of this, but it doesn't seems to be lacking anything.
The voice acting, in English, is quite professional and, at some points, I did feel like the voice was genuinely the voice of the characters. I would like to watch this movie in French (it original language) and compare, but that's for another time.
The visual quality, as I previously stated, is of a certain simplified aesthetics, but it embrace this precise style in a really good and constant way. (The level of details between the characters, the "props" and the background is constant and never feel like they wouldn't fit together.) Also, I got so say that the character design is really great! Even with the low level of implication of the massive amount of characters, they each have their own style and you can recognize them even if they cross the screen for only a second. This must have been an huge endeavor to design, make and animate such an huge set of diversified character and it shows well in result.
This is definitely a movie I plan to buy on disk (DVD or Bluray depending on what is available around me). It's one of those movie you might want to watch one or twice a year, when you surrounded by your family or a good old couch night with a loved one.
