The Rise of Skywalker is much like expecting the presents you wanted for Christmas, but instead getting pairs of socks. Before I get to the negatives, I wanna give credit where credit is due. Visually, it's a stunning film and the acting is top notch - two things that have remained consistent for the Sequel trilogy. But where this film fails on is the story.
I loved The Last Jedi for daring to do things differently, like turning the "who's Rey's parents" question on its head by saying that heritage doesn't matter. Exiled Luke on an uncharted planet, depressed and intent on killing the Jedi Order forever. But these concepts are thrown away in Rise of Skywalker as it capitulates to the loud and obnoxious fans who hated The Last Jedi. Rey's no-body arch is cast aside (and sadly, Disney went back and forth on her lineage since the Force Awakens.)
By the end, I left feeling disappointed. The ending is a nice call back to the original Star Wars that we all know and love and I wouldn't change that one scene, but fan service is one aspect that extraordinarily failed this film. Capitulating to very vocal and toxic haters of the previous film wasn't the way to go, even though they're a small minority of the fanbase.
But as a life-long Star Wars fan, I try to appreciate them all in their own unique ways. This one may not be good, but it's canon and no amount of hate is gonna change that. The Force will be with you. Always.
