Ok I see a lot of people leaving one star ratings, and many of their issues with the show I also shared during the first few episodes. However, I truly believe there is some wiggle room that every show deserves to have as the writers and actors step into their roles and storylines. That being said, I HIGHLY recommend this show. The middle of the season ups the ante set up in the beginning and paves the way for a fantastic finale that left me wanting more.
Here are some things that I thought were fantastic. The acting, for one, is incredible. This is also something that gets much better as the season progresses, with characters like MerlÃn really coming into their own. This role in particular I was unsure about in the beginning since it was being played as a sort of medieval Jack Sparrow, but he become my absolute favorite character in the end. No spoilers here, just watch it. Uther also became a surprising favorite of mine, which I credit to the actor, who played the character very elegantly and true to form.
I was unsure in the beginning since the show seemed to be finding it’s footing, I came to like the artistic transitions in between scenes. It really seems to distinguish the show from others of its kind. Let me be clear; this show may not be for everyone, but I see something very special in it. The intricate relationships between characters and political alliances being made and broken throughout the ten episodes almost reminded me of a YA-type Game of Thrones, which is something I think a lot of people would love. The show doesn’t shy from gore or complex plot, which I also appreciate. Finally, while the dialogue was choppy in some places towards the beginning, some conversations and jokes are undeniably clever and entertaining.
Overall, I strongly encourage those who are unsure by the first few episodes to finish it, as the final episode has many character reveals and plot points that REALLY pay off. I must say, I am impressed by how quickly the show won me over. I hope to see more!
