Its interesting... 56 Rotten Tomatoes rating is ridiculous. They dont know what they are talking about. If there is a complaint about this movie its too broad, yet for the topic, its hard not to be. Its a hard balancing act. But the attempt is grandiose and should be respected. This is a movie with multiple layers and should be seen a number of times. The intensity of the first 30 minutes might of made it an obstacle to itself.
I wish they would of not had the jazz musician doing the blackface thing. It was a layer of complexity that the people there didnt have the time nor the understanding to make it correct. I dont blame them, but I think you have to be selective on an epic and if you cant communicate it on a similar scale that you are reaching for in the main narrative, this supplemental aspect of the story and what is trying to be said about the blackface is too heavy a topic to be jammed into an already thick screenplay.
56 Tomatoes is ridiculous, just the ideas are worth 80, execution effort makes it 90.
And what it was saying in the last 2 minutes is disturbing and somehow true and since its true, what is it saying about us who watch the movies and why. Its very... interesting. Is it simply escape? Is it reflection? Is it education? Is it an exchange of ideas? Very layered and deserves consideration.
