Having visited Taiwan many times over the past 20 years, I was keen to view last night's program on Taiwan. Instead I was very disappointed with the extensive coverage and the focus on Taiwan's pop star politician. The program failed to even mention the existence or seek the views of the other major political party the KMT and to portray any views of Taiwan's indigenous peoples. The extensive time devoted to Kinmen island, located only 5 km from Xiamen in Mainland China was a distortion of the situation in that the island of Formosa (now named Taiwan) which is located at a distance which ranges from 220 km at its widest point to 130 km at its narrowest. An uniformed viewer would have been left with the impression that Taiwan is located within viewing distance of China. I thought that the coverage was poorly constructed and is not likely to please the Chinese nor for that matter the Taiwanese.
Of more major concern, is whether or not this program fairly and objectively provides an informative analysis for Australians of international developments or is it simply a reflection of the ill-informed views of a particular journalist.
