I'm not sure why some critics are so harsh! In the universe of horror movies, this is definitely one of the good ones. A movie beatifully shot, where light and darkness play a role on their own, the Catholic surroundings of churches and chapels create the athmospere of dread and the acting is solid. The devil himself in the goat cameo was a great add on. The magazine scene was superb. As were the references to the Conjuring universe and eerlily credits at the end.
Yes, there are some weak points: the overexposure of Valak, the considerable lack of power posessed by the demons (the humans seem to escape them too easily!) and the plot seemed a bit loose at times.
But overall, it is a very enjoyable and scary movie that you will want to watch again on a dark winter evening with a lit candle and a glass of wine.
