I have been wanting to watch this movie for so long, and wow, what an experience!
I have always been a big fan of Edgar Wright's films, ever since I saw Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Wright makes very unique films - each with their own flair - and always seems to be testing out different genres and filmmaking techniques, and Last Night in Soho is exactly that.
There is not much I can fault this film on. I felt everything was done really well, most notably the production design, visual and special effects and the weaving of the 60s soundtrack into the narrative.
The film reminded me a lot of isekai anime, where the protagonist is transported to a another world. Wright does an excellent job working within that genre, especially when blurring the lines between the past and present.
With that in mind, I enjoyed the commentary on how we tend to romanticise the past and or specific places. Often people, including myself, who enjoy music from a past Era wish they were transported there, but we forget what life used to be like back then.
I resonated with Eloise's character in many ways and truly sympathised with her journey. I am still divided on Thomasin McKenzie's performance as Eloise but otherwise Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith provide solid performances.
Overall, Last night in Soho is a wild ride that blends the horror, mystery, psychological and coming of age genres with the craziness and dark reality of the 60s.
I suggest you skip the trailer, and jump right in.
It will be worth it in the end.
Kind regards,
