a good film a bad remake
There's plenty of good cinematography good acting and Niki Lauda was in it
(Major spoiler warning for both book and movie)
But its not the same story as the book and the 2 movies. This is best showed in the ending. In the book its still October there's at least a month till the war is over no of this faking out that they will survive. Kat gets hit by artillery shrapnel in the leg while Paul is carrying Kat some other shrapnel hit Kat in the back of the head it was pure bad luck. Paul on the other hand being the last from the class who enlisted (another part of the movie lacking) alive realizes that when he gets home nothing will ever be the same he has no future and chooses to stand up in the trench and get shot he got shot on a day so quiet the only thing on the field report is ´´All quiet on the western front´´ this hits so hard after all the suffering these characters have gone through its all for naught, all of them die.
In the movie however its the final day of ww1 and a few hours before the end. Paul and Kat tries to steal a goose/eggs for a second time in the movie this time though they almost gets caught and shot at after running away though all seems fine except oh no suddenly the kid tracks kat down and shots him. This in itself is not bad but its a major change from the book. here he gets shot by someone its not random
in the same way as in the books. for me at least its the randomness that hurts in the book the sheer bad luck of Kat.
And then comes the final battle Why Why Why did they make it a battle
the original ending worked so well its no longer his choice to die
the tragedy of his death is in the timing not the circumstance. even if it was the last day of the war in the book paul would have still chosen to die we don't know if Paul would chose it in the movie to me at least he looks like he doesn't want to die. He still has abit of hope in the movie
that is a major mistake and personally its the worst thing they did
there are more reasons i could list to why i dident like this movie as much as the 1970 or 1930 movies but i feel like this review is long enough already
