Excellent period drama for all audiences. A multilayered journey of two star crosses lovers that explores that yes even the generation of our grandparents and older all dealt with emotions of insecurities, self-doubt and self-interest. It was refreshing to see a black period piece that isn’t obsessed with social justice and the civil rights movement, not everyone was a involved in the movement many people (like my grandparents) just lived normal lives. The beautiful texture and colors of the film was astonishing as well, as a lover of celluloid the choice to use 16mm was the cherry on top to me. The 16mm really heightened the costumes, the flaws of the characters, and the sense of romance in a way that I cannot articulate. All there is left to say is bravo to Eugene Ashe and you must watch this film ASAP!

This film wishes it was Ari Aster’s Heredity (2018), which was released one year prior in 2018. This film uses the same tropes and “enlightened” horror elements of Hereditary’s gothic atmosphere. From the use of the doll house to foreshadow future events, to the repeated insinuation of the absurdity of conventional religion. “Cabin Fever” would have been a much suitable title for this lackluster storyline about the re-emergence of insanity for an ex-cult member. I wanted so much to like this film the trailer was immensely promising, however while viewing the film it was just plain boring,hard to watch and never delivered. The aesthetics where great and it stops about there. It was an art house mediation on genre; just all mise-en-scene and no originality.

Great flick! They just don’t make unapologetically black comedies like this anymore. This film truly is a rare gem in this day and age. No black stereotyping, no political preaching or any junk like that just great jokes, great action and most importantly amazing performances from talented actors. Samuel L. Jackson was cuttin up the whole movie hahaha! Regina Hall is so beautiful and hilarious, Jessie Usher held it down and really keep up with the rest of the cast. I haven’t laughed this hard in a minute at the movies. I would say DO NOT listen to what movie critics are saying they don’t understand “our” culture or sense of humor. I’m pretty sure most of these critics are suburban yts and should be ignored. I highly recommend this movie!
