I’ll be honest and say this film is not for everyone. Especially for younger generations with short attention spans and who demand instant gratification. You have to be at a certain level of spirituality in your life to appreciate this film. The first time I watched it, I thought it was boring. But the second time I watched it a year later, and it’s my favorite movie of all time.
Some of the death scenes are absolutely haunting. The film really captures the fact that humans disrupt nature and despite our ignorance to nature, we’re part of it whether we like it or not. We live in this perpetual cycle of conflict that will never go away and we truly don’t understand where it comes from. There will always be another major war around the corner.
At every stage of the movie, you can easily imagine yourself in the characters’ shoes. For example, being surrounded by an entire company of enemies and being picked by your captain to go scout ahead not knowing if you’ll ever come back. Or being tortured alive and left for dead by the Japanese so that your corpse will serve as an intimidation factor to your fellow Americans. Dark sick stuff comes out of man during war.
Anyone that is in tune with our world and appreciates exploring humanity, you’ll love The Thin Red Line. And for anyone that just wants action scenes, you’ll find some love in this film too, but you’ll be bored for 70% of it.
