Television plays a powerful role in its influence on perception of people, places and beliefs. It is a silent influencer. The portrayal of a woman of color as a major lead character in a science fiction sends a strong message. It means people of color will still be around in the distant future. I grew up during a time when there were no characters of color in
science fiction (not even green ones). “They,”
don’t want or, expect us to be around I concluded. She presumably plays both roles of OSHA and Meg - which displays her acting skills. The plot spiked my interest enough to look forward to each episode. That’s my litmus test. Do I stay with it or, look for something else? The treatment of crime today has evolved, slowly, when it comes to the non-whites. The portrayal of crime analysis: what was acceptable as evidence, who made the determination and what was done as follow up, can be applied to current conditions. If viewed in this context I consider Acolyte to be a powerful, positive portrayal of the future. I’m even curious to know if sibling rivalry issues will be addressed. It gets five stars also because BOTH male and females of color are present. There is usually one or the other (population control?). Love the title also. Kudos to Marvel, writers, cast. Silent influencers.
