The cinematography is phenomenal. You can tell a true artist filmed this. I wasn't impressed with Robert Pattinson's performance as his accent fluctuates and is poorly delivered, but Willem Dafoe is amazing. Pattinson does well staring & performing the chores. Willem Dafoe completely transforms into an old sea captain. It is hard to believe it's actually him. That being said, there is a LOT of seeing Pattinson stare & do chores with some more staring. Dafoe's character is portrayed well as he would drive anyone to the brink of insanity.
The story is okay, but left me feeling disappointed. It has times where the tension builds, but quickly ebbs once a scary scene is shown. It reminded me of The Shining without the steady burn of a tense climax. For example, you hear the music build, see Pattinson realize something bad will happen, see the scare, then go to a scene with the characters eating, laughing, drinking, and yelling. It kills the tension & was very frustrating. There are also few scares. I'm actually not sure why this is considered a horror film. It's suspenseful, but not the least bit scary. The scenes are actually very repetitive to the point where I felt like I was losing my marbles. It's really a shame because there was a significant amount of potential. However, it just didn't meet my expectations.
