Reminiscent of old school martial arts films with floaty wirework and incredible choreography. However, the editing failed to show off some of the action scenes well. The movie was a poor execution of a retelling of a classic story. Rather than re-write Mulan, it felt as though Disney stripped down everything that made the original meaningful. You are not thoroughly invested in the characters. The movie did focus on some meaningful themes but I do not feel that these themes such as family loyalty and being true to one's self. Unfortunately, I feel the themes were not sufficiently explored nor dramatic. For a more "mature" retelling, it felt as though it was expressed as a children's story, a lot of telling the viewers and not a whole lot of showing the viewers. I enjoyed this movie more than the most recent Lion King but that is a low bar to pass.
