Just watched this movie for the first time in years, I used to own a DVD of this movie and I may still have it, but it probably doesn’t work. So I just watched it online. And my thoughts after the first viewing are mixed. The animation is really good, the plot is fun, and I did like most of the slapstick. But the major drawbacks are the non-slapstick jokes and the pacing. The movie can feel really slow at times and feels like it drags on, for example the scene where Jerry is sitting at the street corner looking at the shops. It’s probably a 2-3 minute scene, but it feels more like 5-6 minutes. And the dialogue jokes are also not very funny. I wasn’t laughing at anything that wasn’t slapstick. And while Tom and Jerry was mostly made for slapstick jokes, it can have some pretty funny dialogue on occasion. Here though, the dialogue either wasn’t trying or was trying too hard. I can’t tell or remember, the dialogue is so forgettable. When the movie hits, it hits good, when it misses, it’s like missing a target 7 inches away from you. Badly. Also the screams Tom and Jerry make remind me more of Itchy and Scratchy from The Simpsons rather than Tom and Jerry. Also there’s not a lot of use of the magic ring in the movie, most of the time it just sits on Jerry’s head, and gets used for the first time halfway through the movie I believe, or it just feels like that because of the pacing. Overall I give this movie a 6.3/10 (the same rating on IMDB as of 3/24/22 funny enough). TL;DR: Decent movie with awful pacing, but the slapstick and animation are really good. 6.3/10 or 3/5 stars.
