My first review, so don't mind poor or weak word choice please. Also spoiler warning if you haven't watched the movie yet! :)
My brother and I just watched the movie together for the first time, and I was hesitating to watch this before due to hearing about negative reviews without actually knowing what they were about.
Now, after watching the movie and reading these poor reviews to see why people didn't enjoy the movie, I have just one question to ask those who left one star... Did you even watch the movie properly?
Did you not see one of the main messages of the movie? Letting people decide for themselves who or what they want to be? Throughout this movie, we have Searcher disagreeing with his father Jaeger due to Jaeger having an interest and goal in exploring while Searcher had an interest in botany, than we get the next generation, Ethan, wanting to explore and find what he wants to do beyond farming like Searcher wants him to do.
This movie's messages were wonderfully conveyed with fun scenes and serious scenes, all scenes beautifully animated, wonderfully voice-acted and greatly scripted. Yet those who are leaving one star reviews are mainly complaining about the skin tone or gender of the couples that are normalized and behave the same as any straight white couple in the world.
The only complaint I saw about the plot itself is the "Dad leaves for milk" trope that happens with Jaeger? Everyone is too focused on Disney being progressive and ignoring the actual true messages about caring for a family member while letting them explore what they want to pursue and how to care for the environment when a fossil fuel/virus is bad for the earth.
My brother and I think the movie is great and think everyone should give this movie a try, to form your own opinion and ignore the bigots who didn't watch the movie properly after seeing an interracial couple followed by a same-sex crush interest.
