This is an incredible show with a great storyline and phenomenal acting. The actors did a great job at bringing the characters to life especially considering that the story exists within different time frames and different contexts. The attention to detail from costuming, to set design and even the makeup in the different eras is commendable!
However, the writers could have done more to help the audience understand the fundamental meaning of McCarthyism. Instead it felt like the burden was placed on the audience shoulders to learn about McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare in order to understand what’s happening on the show. The story felt more like a showcase of the impact of McCarthyism.
Also, in the beginning, keeping up with the era switches was quite challenging and yet again viewers were forced to adapt.
Nevertheless, this story is soooo important because it highlights how far the LGBTQ+ community has come from a political, social and even medical perspective. The liberty that exists in 2023 is a result of the pain and suffering that icons from that era had to endure. A reminder to appreciate the freedom found in the now. Extremely well done.
