A fabulous read from start to finish. It’s really a book about complicated family dynamics set to the backdrop of adventure on the high seas. Heywood’s determination to set her own life path, despite long odds and the noted desires of her parents, is nothing short of inspiring. Her deep thirst for education, seemingly self driven, was particularly admirable. There can be no doubt that the way she overcame life’s early challenges shaped her later successes. You get an appreciable sense of the intense struggle she had, more than most could ever imagine, to break free of the life thrust upon her to the one she truly wanted to lead. I loved this book and would highly recommend if you like autobiographical stories and journeys of self discovery.
