The least consisten show in the history of television. For a solid while (Tennant era) it felt like the peak of TV with exciting stories, brilliant characters, amazing music, balancing multiple genres across different episodes. Unfortunately, after enjoying great heights of success, the show became bland and boring. Some episodes of the chibnall era are simply unwatchable. Everyone (myself included) was ecstatic about the news of Russell returning at the helm and Tennant reprising his role. I was relieved that the show would be back on track. But then... Their first episode back was meh. Some horrifically cringe moments coupled with moments of nostalgic joy seeing Tennant back with Tate. Their 2nd episode was a big improvement. FINALLY it felt like Doctor Who was back! The 3rd and final of the anniversary was good but had a mediocre conclusion. Mixed bag but it gave me hope and I liked Gatwa's performance so far. and thus the new Davies era began. I was hesitant about the upcoming stories and dubious of the new doctor but I gave it a chance and was still excited. I felt nothing but disappointment. It seems Davies originally left at the right time because his ideas have truly dissipated.
The source material is gold and the potential is endless. It is almost unfathomable how a show with such a premise and one of the best characters in all of fiction became so stale. No effort is made with continuity or developing anything interesting without destroying the canon. I still appreciate how great this show once was and if I were to write this review 10 years ago it would be a 5 star. The overall quality has been so diluted that its legacy is irrevocably tarnished. Once the gold standard of TV storytelling (peaking with series 4 of the revival) and now a trainwreck. It pains me that a show that should be 5 stars puts me in such a position where anything over 3 stars is an injustice in accuracy.
Now allow me to conclude this review with some poetry:
Is there hope? No. None. It has been killed many times over. It's done.
