One has to appreciate the care and effort that went into restoring and translating this revealing chronicle of an eighteen year old soldier thrown into the endless battle of the Isonzo on the front llnes of the Austrian-Italian
campaign of World War I. The casualtes were enormous.
After reading this record, I don't think anyone will ever believe that the famous battles in France overshadow the battles in the Alps and eastern Europe in ferocity and suffering.
I was also bemused by the casual and almost benign treatment of the Austrian POWs by their Italian captors.
The writer of this diary was my uncle, my father's bg brother. You can imagine how moving a read this was for me.
