As we got our tickets and prepared to go in the theater, a woman who overheard us purchase came up and said, “You’ve made an excellent choice.” She told us about bringing her entire family to see the movie during Christmas. She admitted she had felt some concern because of the storyline—-her family had no idea about the film except who played the starring part. But by the time it was over, her family was telling her what a good movie it was. I confessed I feared it would be too depressing, and she said it was depressing but that was not the main feeling she or her family came away with. They were inspired, enlightened and also lifted up at the strength of the human spirit. And after watching this amazing film, so were we. My companion termed it his “movie of a lifetime.” A finely crafted script, impeccable performances and cinematography/staging that seemed to pull me right into the room with them. I would encourage anyone who has dealt with loss, isolation, guilt, rejection or the painful frustration of wanting desperately to help someone choose another outcome to see “The Whale.” A fantastic film.
