I have only good things to say of Tangled, and I believe it's quite easily one of the greatest animated movies to date. The plot is an interesting, unique take on the original Grimm tale (though thank goodness Disney made it age-appropriate) and blends a beautiful mix of fantasy, comedy, romance, horror, and realism together into an original fairytale. The voice actors are well-picked and did an AMAZING job delivering each character's personality and emotions properly. The soundtrack features 4 songs (When Will My Life Begin, Mother Knows Best, I've Got a Dream, I See the Light), all memorable, catchy, diverse and beautiful - as well as orchestral and traditional music. The animation is gorgeous, especially for 2010 and the budget + time this movie had. The color scheme they had for Rapunzel is gorgeous and the palettes for each different scene complement the vibes it gives off so well.
The characters are lovable and well-written. Flynn's character is complex (he and Naveen have the most personality out of all Disney princes - ) and his development throughout the course of the movie is commendable - from a selfish thief chasing a daydream, he becomes a man willing to sacrifice his own life so that the one he loves can live hers. Rapunzel is a relatable and good-hearted, creative girl who brings out the best in others and is a literal ray of sunshine, for real though, she's got so much personality - Gothel is one of the best Disney villains, I believe, because she's written so realistically and her manipulation and mind tricks an gaslighting are far more powerful and traumatizing than any spell that can be broken with a true love's kiss. And Max and Pascal will go down as the two of the best animal sidekicks in Disney!
I also love the way so many of the little things that often go unnoticed in this movie have such a huge significance/tell us so much about the character. There's an interesting bit of symbolism and imagery going on, and if you try to take this movie apart and analyze it it's quite realistic and interesting in more ways than one.
I recommend this movie to any animation/Disney-lover and even to those who aren't quite familiar with the genre - seriously, give it a try, you won't regret it! The age range I think is the movie is best tailored for is probably 9-12 or above. It's fun and enjoyable, with some dark/mature themes older audiences can appreciate.
(My favorite scenes - SPOILERS AHEAD! - ranked, are the one where Rapunzel first questions Flynn and his motives - the Snuggly Duckling part, all of it - the almost-drowning underwater and later when Rapunzel heals Flynn's - or should I say Eugene's? - hand, the Kingdom Dance, and the boat scene with I See The Light and the beautiful orchestra music. And of course, the family reunion)
Overall, this movie is a masterpiece of modern/animated cinematography and is enjoyable no matter how many times you watch it (trust me, I know). Its jokes and lines are timeless and the whole movie is just - just wonderful (it makes sense why it got a Tangled: Before Ever After, Tangled: the Series/Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, which is as good - if not better than - the movie, and Tangled Ever After). I love Rapunzel to death, I love Flynn, I love the pub thugs, I love Max and Pascal, I love Queen Arianna and King Frederic, I love the tower (but obviously not when it's being used as a literal prison). And I love Tangled.
(sorry this was so long >-<)
