I never watched the anime, however, the story for this adaptation was quite easy for a non-anime watcher to follow, and I really appreciated the uniqueness of the story as well as the visuals, overall it's a really good plot with a good message. After I finished this show, I actually started watching the anime so I could get more of the story, that should speak for itself, definitely recommend, especially if you like pirates and adventure shows/movies.
