It is shameful that we have these views set up by hearing people that back then primarily pushed for oral communication. Although, there were state deaf schools (mostly) residential. It wasn't until the mid to late 1980s that the idea of total communication came out. This was using almost anything to communicate.
I believe with all children, deaf or hearing etc we must use a variety of approaches to help them communicate & learn. We are individuals who are unique and most of the time we learn & communicate differently
