TL;DR Do not choose this book to read if you value your sanity. I had a choice to choose which book I wanted to read over the course of two weeks for AP english. Kite runner was my first choice with this being my second due to it being short. I regret ever putting this on my list. This is the most boring book I have ever forced myself to read. I can’t read three sentences without zoning out, this must be what it feels like to have adhd. There is absolutely no attempt to make a character-reader connection whatsoever. I get what the author was trying to do with the accent thing, but it’s just incredibly annoying and some parts are actually unintelligible (She also made the characters have Nigerian accents for some reason even though they are in Florida, the actors in the movie are more accurate). The only palpable parts are halfway through the book and they really aren’t anything special. I ended up watching the movie which is surprisingly just as sleep inducing. The ending is good, this is the only redeeming quality. As it turns out, the author actually has a very interesting background so it is sad that this book is such a dud.
