I think that Bud not Buddy is a deep and fun book to read. It is suitable for kids of all ages and provides a very interesting story. The story starts in Flint, when a ten year old boy named Bud Caldwell is adopted into a bad home with the Amoses. They treat him very bad and he ends up running away. He sleeps under a tree with his only item being a suitcase that is the only thing that his mother gave to him before she died. He does not know who his dad is, but he thinks it is a famous band player: Herman E Calloway. He goes on a trip to try to meet him on train with his friend at the orphanage, Bugs, but he misses the train and walks without him.
While he is walking to Grand Rapids in order to get to his supposed dad. While he is walking, he is picked up by a stranger. He is named lefty Lewis, and he feeds bud and drops him off at grand Rapids after Bud spent the night at the house. When he meets Calloway and his band, he says he never had any children except a daughter. His band members accept him though and they go to dinner with him and the name of the place is called the Sweet Pea. .He tells them about his past and what he is doing here. When they hear they let him stay with them for a while.
After some questions to Bud at breakfast they learn Herman E Calloway is his grandfather. Herman denies it until they realize they got proof. They found out because Bud’s mom’s name is Angela Janet Caldwell (Calloway) and so is Herman’s daughter. They found out that one day, after an argument they had, she ran away and changed her last name. After, Herman mourns the death of her daughter, not knowing she died. After this all the band members decide that Bud can live with them. After a while, bud and Herman get along and the band is like family.
