Not sure why the lead female character is first presented as what seems to be a Lara Croft cosplay. Might have been a decent quirk if it was used to delineate some aspect of her backstory, but no such luck. Despite this, the mood and tone during the first two-thirds of the movie is well done. The acting is good. The back story being investigated by the characters is unusual and interesting. There are some truly unusual, almost perfect moments ... "I can't run fast enough but I can slow em down. ... Find the breach and close it. ... Tell Delores I didn’t mess up my good coat." ... but you have to get through the rest of the movie to see them. It's difficult to conclude that it's worth it, because everything is wasted once the monsters show up. They are easily recognizable as people in monster suits, and the suits are not particularly imaginative or unusual. Questions raised in the first part of the movie simply become huge plot holes. The explanations are either massively inadequate or simply non-existent. The best defense against monsters is electrified chicken wire? The locals hold off an attack using shotguns, hunting rifles and a flamethrower, but decide not to call the police, sheriff's dept., or perhaps the military? Too many cliches and formulaic aspects. And of course the most gruesome death is reserved for the Black guy? Two stars is generous.
