Remorseless agony of man abused as a child. Endless repetition of his self abuse and health issues. Not really clear why he gained the huge loyalty from his close knit group and they were there through thick and thin. A bit about the law and philosophy at the start but no other observations of note about the world/America/culture. Women are almost completely absent. If you read this book you need to be a speed reader
