Amazing art, great characters, and a great premise, but is too cryptic for its own good and consistently fumbles when broaching heavy subjects. Would've still been 4 stars but the ending was so tasteless it's honestly deeply offensive.
The first 6 episodes were good enough that I think they can redeem themselves in future seasons, but I'm not interested after the finale. I simply don't have faith in the writers after such a hackneyed execution of a really delicate subject.
***SPOILERS***
The payoff to the whole season is our protagonist getting suddenly and brutally r***d by a family friend and says he did it to their sister too. The writers then decide that right after this is a perfect time for the other protag to confess his romantic feelings and it feels very gross and overly saccharine for the brutality that precedes it. And here I was ecstatic to have a scarred-up female (presenting) lead in the post apocalypse WITHOUT a gratuitous backstory of SA.
