I give it 2 stars because It has Clooney & he is an amazing actor. His acting in this does not disappoint. And that is all this movie has going for it.
*Spoilers
The movie starts with an interesting plot of Earth becoming uninhabitable and the population fleeing to a new home planet. The way it was set up, however, was clumsy and there was no connection that should have been built from that to get the viewer invested. The man who is implied to be the lone survivor starts hallucinating a child. It was very clear to me when she was introduced that he must have been imagining her. It wasn't set up very well though, because why is he imagining her in a room that he is not in and looking at him while he is sleeping? And she is on the outside, watching a structure that he is in sink.. And why would he give an imaginary child his last food? The plot is all over the place and never really connects. As far as the woman on the ship, there is no connection built at all, and that would have been so easy to do. And the man on earth, towards the end talks about people living on Earth underground, and another man comes back to Earth to look for his family.. but they led us to believe this man was the only one, we have seen no other people, and they said Earth was uninhabitable..And if people can live on Earth (underground) then why is it so urgent to tell the astronauts not to return? Plus they act like the two on the craft are the only ones left, but the woman talks about how beautiful and wonderful the new world is..so why did they leave it?
