Wisconsin 0ctober 17, 1907. A blizzard strikes this frozen land already covered in snow. It's been so cold in this fictional town, that the river is frozen solid. The average temperature in Wisconsin in October is 48 degrees. Even allowing for global warming, the frozen, blizzard conditions were impossible. The first three paragraphs of the book are heavy with overwritten sentences describing a condition that could only exist in the furthest northern Wisconsin towns in January, maybe December, but nowhere in WI early fall, mid October.
