The writing is beautiful. The suspense builds up, and focuses a sharp light on questions about what it means to be human, what it means to be a parent, what it means to be part of a community. We are nearly as much in the dark about the nature of the event which has changed their world forever, but what matters is how each of the novel’s subjects faces their isolation and the lack of that connection to the outside world that previously gave their lives meaning.
