I think this film requires a lot of intelligence or past knowledge to understand the plot, characters, correlate events to understand each scene, as the director has tried to portray a novel within a short period of 2.5 hours.
Above explains why directors in the past have not even dared to touch this subject.
Hats off to Mani Ratnam for:
1) Director has not taken just inspiration from the novel and made a hero villain movie which would have commercially worked very well and could have earned the movie another Rs.500 crore.
2) It takes guts to narrate the movie in the same way as that of a novel. This means director has tried to give the viewers the same experience which he got when he first read the novel
3) Director has depicted mannerisms and style of living in the 9th century.
Overall director has given a realistic movie depicting people in 9th century rather than a exaggerated and a movie full of VFX.
Hats off to Vikram, though he come in very few scenes, his character is very impactful and his expressions in the war scene and love failure are amazing.
Jayam Ravi - We can only say he has lived as a Prince, great portrayal of charisma and elan.
We can say there is a beauty competition between Aishwarya and Trisha. Both these characters are pivotal characters.
I felt songs were too many. However we can see that lot of story was communicated thru these songs.
Rahman's music was good, however I thought BGM could have been better. In some places, BGM was not syncing with the plots.
In some places, some of the scenes looked illogical, they can improve on those points.
PS-1 has set the plot now, and I feel PS-2 will have more in store.
Overall, it is a movie of a different genre and everyone should watch it.
