Gripping, realistic drama. I speak from experience. In 2003, I was that suddenly single mom, with an infant, a 3 year old and a six year old. I waited in those long lines for every form of aid available to me. I felt the disapproving eyes as I swiped my food card and used my wic vouchers. I had the free medicaid health insurance for my kids, and while I was so grateful for it, I felt like pathetic white trash every time I took my kids to the doctor and handed them my medical card. Just like Alex, my kids were my world. I went through a heinous custody battle to make sure they were taken care of and remained safely in my care. I started an in-home licensed daycare in 2004 and began to rebuild my life. I remarried in 2005, and here I am 16 years later, my husband and I own a business that employs 9-12 employees (depending on the time of year). There is hope. Support for struggling single mom's is so important. Don't rely on the government to do all the work, if you know someone in that situation, you have no idea how much even a $20 bill means to them. Most of the time, that first year, I had less than that in my bank account.
