Great directorial job by Dev Patel. His shots were subtle when needed, contrasting at times and full of in-your-face fighting sequences. His use of colors and shadows are something you’d expect from a seasoned vet not a neophyte director. The story is gripping, moving and rich. This film presents a magnificent mixture of Hindi culture with the West’s appetite for wanton violence. And Patel expertly weaves both facets without losing sight of the end goals: to honor his culture and give the audience a satisfying action movie. His character would give John Wick a run for his money. In all, a highly enjoyable film.

Freaking awesome. Must see. Funny, crude, outlandish, outrageous sight gags, and the cameos are spectacular. A whole lot of fun. Highly recommended!!

There are two ways to review this film: as an Exorcist fan and based on what horror movies are like these days. In their attempt to deliver something different and new, they went so far from the original formula that they made a movie that is unintelligible. They relied too much on gore and disgust instead of tension, fright and the supernatural aspect of The Ecorcist. As a new chapter in this franchise, it failed. As a horror movie for the new generation, it succeeds. A few days ago, I saw all 5 Exorcist movies, which are still scary (except #2). This one has no scares except for the obligatory animal jumping out. Hate it when they resort to cliches.

Just saw The Black Phone. Highly recommended. Good old fashioned scary movie. No gore, no demonic BS. It is well written with several good jump out of your seats scares. Good solid film. I particularly enjoyed the look and feel of the film-making. It is set in the 1970s and if I didn’t know better, I would say this movie was filmed in 35mm—at least in some parts.
