Horrible overall message. It glorifies disobeying your parents. There are zero repercussions for the main character Mei (such as lying, sneaking out, making incredibly reckless decisions) also pushes way too hard on depending on your friends for happiness. While I agree the mother could be overbearing at times...I don't think saying no to a 13 year old girl going to a concert alone with friends that cost 200$ a ticket is an unusual thing to say no to. The overall message was do whatever you want no matter what your parents say and you won't have consequences because you're being your "true self".
